Weekend Box Office: 'Mission: Impossible' Takes Christmas Crown, as 'Dragon Tattoo,' 'Tintin,' 'Zoo' Stumble

Coming back towards the days when Tom Cruise would be a top domestic box office draw may have appeared as an impossible mission, but 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol,' easily fended off several highly-recommended beginners, including 'The Girl Using the Dragon Tattoo' and 'The Adventures of Tintin,' to accept holiday box office crown. After last week's effective IMAX-only debut, the 4th 'Mission: Impossible' installment broadened from 425 screens to three,448, leading to an believed second-weekend take of $26.5 million. That's about $ten million under most commentators predicted, however it was still being far in front of every other movie a few days ago. Plus, with decent word-of-mouth with no new wide releases next weekend, the film might support the top slot for an additional couple of weeks. The movie's total up to now involves $59. million. Last week's champion, 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game Title of Shadows,' fell a clear, crisp 55 percent for an believed $17.8 million an additional-place finish. (No surprise, with as much as four new wide release movies elbowing in to the action/mystery/adventure/thriller space.) In 2 weekends, it's gained a good $76.six million. In third place, 'Alvin and also the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,' dropped 42 percent for an believed $13.3 million. Individuals amounts need to be an enormous disappointment for that franchise, whose first couple of payments made a lot more than $215 million each. That one has gained just $50.3 million in 2 days. It will be lucky to obtain anywhere near $100 million. Debuting in 4th place, 'The Girl Using the Dragon Tattoo' gained an believed $13. million. That's well below anticipation, that have been a minimum of $18 million around the low finish. In the end, the film is dependant on a best-selling book, is customized towards the gifts of their A-list director (David Fincher) and it has been riding a wave of hype and Oscar buzz for any year. Still, it is a lengthy movie (nearly three hrs), which limits the amount of occasions daily it may screen, it provides extensive competition among current wide-release thrillers, and it is pretty harsh and terrible for moviegoers inside a holiday mood. Still, its acclaim and originality (little else in theaters is dark) can provide it some legs. Getting opened up in mid-week, it's gained an overall total to date of $21.4 million. 'The Adventures of Tintin' had been a massive worldwide hit when it opened up here on Wednesday. That is good since the Steven Spielberg family-friendly action tale gained only an believed $9.a million in the domestic box office over the past weekend (finishing at No. 5) and $17.a million total in The United States for that week. That's by what was expected, given American audiences' insufficient knowledge of the ecu comic-book adventurer. Getting already gained $239 million overseas, the manufacturers of 'Tintin' most likely aren't too disappointed. Debuting in sixth place was 'We Purchased a Zoo,' that has made an believed $7.8 million because it opened up on Friday. Again, that's about everything was expected from the family-friendly film, despite some buzz-building sneak previews in recent days. Reviews were mixed, and Matt Damon is not as bankable of the title outdoors the experience genre. Final figures for that crowded Christmas weekend, which incorporated the Sunday releases of Steven Spielberg's period drama 'War Horse' and also the alien invasion thriller 'The Pitch-dark Hour,' will not be launched until Tuesday. Only at that writing, there have been no studio estimations yet for that first day's receipts for that two December 25 debuts. Prior to the weekend, pundits' forecasts for 'War Horse' were within the $6-$7 million range for Sunday, when they expected just $2 or $3 million from 'The Pitch-dark Hour.' 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' - Trailer No. 2 The entire top ten: 1. 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol,' $26.5 million (3,448 screens) $59. million total 2. 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game Title of Shadows,' $17.8 million (3,703), $76.six million 3. 'Alvin and also the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,' $13.3 million (3,734), $50.3 million 4. 'The Girl Using the Dragon Tattoo,' $13. million (2,914), $21.4 million 5. 'The Adventures of Tintin,' $9.a million (3,087), $17.a million 6. 'We Purchased a Zoo,' $7.8 million (3,117), era 7. 'New Year's Eve,' $4. million (2,225), $32.3 million total 8. 'Arthur Christmas,' $2.7 million (1,804), $44.two million 9. 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Beginning Part 1,' $2.a million (1,603), $270.9 million 10. 'Hugo,' $2. million (1,236) $43.7 million [Photos: Vital ('Mission: Impossible'), The new sony ('The Girl Using the Dragon Tattoo'), Vital ('The Adventures of Tintin'), twentieth century Fox ('We Purchased a Zoo')] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook Follow Gary Susman on Twitter: @garysusman

Batman Star Bale Tries To Visit China Activist

First Published: December 16, 2011 9:09 AM EST Credit: Getty Images BEIJING -- Caption Christian Bale arrives at the 2009 Los Angeles premiere of Public Enemies, June 23, 2009Batman star Christian Bale, in the midst of promoting a film he made in China that some critics have called propaganda, was physically stopped by government-backed guards from visiting a blind activist living under house arrest with a CNN crew in tow to record the scuffle. CNN posted footage of the confrontation on its website Friday. The run-in and publicity is likely to cause discomfort in Chinas government-backed film industry, which hopes Bales movie The Flowers of War will be a creative success at home and abroad. The stars actions are sure to focus attention on the plight of Chen Guangcheng, guarded around the clock by thugs who have blocked dozens of reporters and fellow activists trying to see him in the past. Bale was to leave China on Friday and his representatives could not immediately be reached for comment. Bale, who won a best supporting actor Oscar for last years The Fighter, traveled Thursday with a crew from CNN to the village in eastern China where Chen, the blind lawyer, lives with his family in complete isolation. They were stopped at the entrance to Dongshigu village in Shandong province by unidentified men. The video footage shows Bale asking to see Chen, with a CNN producer providing interpretation, but being ordered by one of the guards to leave. He then asked why he was unable to pass through. The guards responded by trying to grab or punch a small video camera Bale was carrying. What I really wanted to do was to meet the man, shake his hand and say what an inspiration he is, Bale was quoted as saying by CNN. Chens case has been raised publicly by U.S. lawmakers and diplomats, including Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, all to no response from China. CNN said Bale first learned of Chen from news reports when he was in China filming The Flowers of War, Chinas official submission this year for best foreign language film Oscar. Chen Guangcheng is a newsworthy figure and as such it is in the interest of CNNs global viewers to hear from him, CNN said in a statement. Mr. Bale reached out to CNN and invited us to join him on his journey to visit Chen. Chen, a self-taught lawyer who was blinded by a fever in infancy, angered authorities after documenting forced late-term abortions and sterilizations and other abuses by overzealous authorities trying to meet population control goals in his rural community. He was imprisoned for allegedly instigating an attack on government offices and organizing a group of people to disrupt traffic, charges his supporters say were fabricated. Although now officially free under the law, he has been confined to his home in the village eight hours drive from Beijing and subjected to periodic beatings and other abuse, activists say. While Bales visit focuses new attention on Chens case, CNNs role raises questions about activism and advocacy among reporters, said David Bandurski, editor of the China Media Project website at the University of Hong Kong. It made me instantly uncomfortable, wondering how it all came together. It raises questions about where the lines are drawn, Bandurski said. The incident also drew strong interest most of it highly positive on social networking sites such as Twitter and its Chinese equivalent, Weibo. Having their stars name pinging across the Internet in connection with such a politically sensitive subject puts promoters of The Flowers of War in a bind. The film opens in China on Friday and next week in the United States. Directed by the renowned Zhang Yimou, it is also the most expensive Chinese movie ever made, at $94 million, some of which came from the state-owned Bank of China. The movie centers on the 1937 sacking of the eastern city of Nanjing, a central event in Chinas pre-revolutionary century of humiliation and has been described by some critics as hewing to official propaganda portraying Chinese as heroic victims and Japanese as one-dimensional cartoon villains. While China has the worlds third-largest film industry both in box office and output it has made relatively little global impact. Story lines are often heavily influenced by the ruling Communist Party, whose culture commissars must approve scripts and have final say over whether a film gets released. What's with all the meaner screeners?

I know it's wrongheaded, but I'm beginning to be anti-anti-piracy.Wherever you turn these days, the anti-piracy mafia has become ever more shrill. There's a new White House initiative, there are new bills in the House and Senate -- and then, of course, there are Hollywood's awards-season screeners. The DVDs sent to voters do not begin with a cheerful invitation to enjoy the film, but rather with a litany of legal threats that each year grow longer and more dire.Talk to the anti-piracy professionals, of course, and they'll acknowledge these admonitions consist of useless legal rhetoric. Each year, essentially the same percentage of vids end up getting pirated anyway. There are growing signs that the copyright-protection lobby is pissing people off rather than converting them to the cause. Political leaders and the Silicon Valley elite all seem alarmed by new bills with virtuous-sounding titles like the Protect Intellectual Property Act -- bills that, as the Wall Street Journal observed, could "strangle the Internet with regulation."The fear is that, if these bills pass, a single infringing link on a single page of a website could result in the entire site being shut down.In Hollywood, the release of screeners each year plays out like a ritual of ambivalence. The studios want voters to view the screeners -- but not really. They'd prefer we go to theaters. So would filmmakers, who resent seeing their artistry squeezed onto a TV screen. Even the Academy's furtive experiments with digital downloads make filmmakers edgy because streamed images look more like standard-def DVDs than like high-def Blu-rays (the same for iTunes streaming).I've been an Oscar voter for many years and relish the annual avalanche of screeners, but I nonetheless find the threats and admonitions tiresome. Further, a substantial number of TV sets cannot recognize the "enter" instruction on the vids that certify your "acceptance" of the threats, so you never get to see the movie anyway.Historically, screeners have always seemed to drive the Academy to distraction. One year voters were even sent a device that scanned the screeners, but many were defective and were soon discarded. For the studios, dispatching screeners is an expensive exercise -- the whole production and marketing process comes to as much as $400,000 a film. Voters may receive a DVD and a Blu-ray but distributors are not supposed to send more than one screener to a voter. To save costs, a few studios have tried to develop exclusionary lists of "retired" Academy members -- those who do not pay their $250 annual fee and thus cannot cast votes. No one knows what percentage of the 6,000 Academy members is "retired" but it could run into the thousands as a result of the bad economy and the Academy's AARP-plus demographics. As a voting member, I still find it gratifying to watch a screener in the quiet of my den to admire the individual components of the filmmaking process -- art direction, cinematography, etc. With that in mind, it's doubly jarring to be instructed at the outset that I must break the screener in half immediately upon viewing and feed it into the nearest inferno.I don't like destroying movies. I also don't like breaking videos in half (there must be myriad lawsuits over cuts and bruises). Finally, what if the voter wants to rerun a DVD just before the final vote to reassess a performance or even a musical score? The anti-piracy zealots aren't interested in aesthetic considerations such as these. They want to protect their copyright even if they have to badger you and send you to jail to do so. Contact Peter Bart at peter.bart@variety.com

John Landis on Eddie Murphy: 'I Don't Know If He's Interested in Being Really Funny Anymore'

With credits that include, 'Animal House,' 'Blues Brothers,' 'Three Amigos,' 'Trading Places' and 'Coming to America,' it's not too much of a stretch to call director John Landis a comedic genius. On top of that, Landis has been given -- thanks to those last two films on the list -- a unique insight into the mind of Eddie Murphy. This information is particularly useful now, considering Murphy has been in the news recently, as you may have noticed. (He's funny again in 'Tower Heist'! He's going to host the Oscars! He's not going to host the Oscars! He's not funny anymore in 'A Thousand Words'!) Since the mid-'90s, Murphy has faced criticism regarding his choice of roles. Landis recently spoke to the NY Times about his career as a filmmaker and his thoughts on Murphy. When I made 'Trading Places,' Eddie was 19 or 20 and bouncing off the wall with talent and was a very happy guy. When I made 'Coming to America,' it was a few years later, Eddie had become an international star and was not as happy. It was awkward on that film because he was kind of a jerk, and we had a real falling out. But still we worked together very well... Eddie's really funny in this movie. He can be really funny when he wants to be. I don't know if he's interested in being really funny anymore, honestly. Ouch. Unfortunately, Landis is not alone in this. Although some of Murphy's recent films -- 'Norbit,' 'Daddy Day Care' -- made money, they've been panned by critics, who clamor for the return of the "old Murphy." Here's an idea: an Eddie Muprhy/John Landis reunion! Although, if history tells us anything about Eddie, he may not like that pitch, especially after reading the Landis comments. You can check out the entire John Landis interview, where he discusses 'An American Werewolf in London' and Jheri curl jokes, over on NYT. Pols, biz jockey on anti-piracy bill

Supporters and competitors of the major bit of anti-piracy legislation jockeyed to boost their positions on Monday, having a key critic within the Senate vowing to filibuster and also the music business delivering an analysis showing the bill likes bipartisan support each year of gridlock. The legislation in the home and also the Senate is targeted at curbing so-known as "rogue" websites overseas that traffic in unlicensed goods, including movies, Television shows and music. But experts state that the balance is written too broadly, and warn of unintentional effects when the government seeks court orders forcing Internet companies to bar domains and search engines like google to disable links. Chief one of the competitors within the Senate is Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Or), who put a hang on the balance soon after it passed the Senate Judiciary Committee all in May. On Monday, Wyden made an appearance inside a video for that progressive org DemandProgress by which he stated he stated he planned a filibuster and, included in this kind of action, would read in the floor from the Senate what they are called of individuals who signed a petition opposing the legislation. "Congress must listen to a lot more than the insurance supporters who authored this bill, Congress must listen to individuals like you who understand the need for a totally free and fair Internet," Wyden stated. On the other hand from the debate, it Industry Assn. of America launched an analysis they stated "underscores the initial character from the broad, bipartisan support" for that legislation within the Senate. From the 1,882 bills which have been introduced within the Senate to date this session, only 31 other bills benefit from the support of 35 or even more cosponsors. Of individuals 31, only 18 enjoy "substantial bipartisan support." The Senate bill, known as the Safeguard IP Act, has 39 co-sponsors from both sides. Contact Ted Manley at ted.manley@variety.com

For individuals galleries, their marketing campaigns are extremely Golden Globes-specific and achieve to Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. voters via tests and press conferences."The Golden Globes convey more groups compared to Academy awards, so you will find plenty of possibilities for hopefuls to achieve traction," states Robert Marich, author of "Marketing for Moviegoers." "The Globes are low-hanging fruit -- easy pickings that allow the honours consultants say, 'Hey, we did our obligation since you are nominated.'"Much consists of the bond between getting a Golden Globes nom and/or win and being recognized in the Academy awards, but from the marketing perspective the honours are extremely different."It's two different voting physiques, so they just don't correlate," states Utley.Altering course on the major marketing plan's sometimes hard to do midstream, but sometimes neglecting to have an expected nom in the Globes could be a sign that it should be done.As well as in other instances, being excluded from the Globes can effectively kill a film's honours chances and then leave it available to the incorrect type of publicity."You are able to finish up in a lot of tales about who skipped out, about who snubbed," states Utley. "That may put type of a stink on the movie you need to fight back from."Marich concurs: "If talent or perhaps a film is not nominated within the Globes, voters for other honours need to question if snubbed films and talent are actually worthy. The candidates know this, so that they don't wish to be conspicuous by their absence."Lastly, you will find always training to become learned from not receiving a nom that may be advantageous for any film. Utley states such situations may reveal an offer is not working and provide entrepreneurs an opportunity to reverse strategy."Maybe it's a different ad approach, different quotes you are using within the marketing or finding one other way of speaking concerning the movie," Utley describes.GOLDEN GLOBES PREVIEWRicky did not lose their number Peace for some time as org and prodco collaborate No-limit rule a boon for global pic parade HFPA declines being starstruck in noms process Marketing methods can change at Globes time No relaxation for that bleary-eyed New kids on the market Contact the range newsroom at news@variety.com

The TV's turn to have an extreme transformation

The family room tv is beginning to appear just a little lengthy within the tooth. With 100s of Television channels to select from, 1000's of on-demand shows at individuals tips of the fingers (plus 1000's more from third-party services like Netflix and Hulu) along with a near infinite quantity of online content fighting for viewers' attention, the way in which customers connect to their sets is seriously outdated. It appears like change is in route. In the Electronic Devices Show in The month of january, interface would be a major buzzword -- and you will find lots of gossips Apple is thinking about creating a Television set of their own. But reinventing the tv is tricky. After so years of the conventional power grid-based program guide, customers are not wanting to re-locate of the safe place. Also, rather than cooperating being an industry, TV producers are largely searching for internal solutions."Producers frequently prefer to build closed systems -- which causes it to be hard to integrate all of them with one another," states Craig Engler, senior v . p . and g.m. of Syfy Digital. "Maybe Apple does for that television industry what it really did for pills: produce a new standard that everybody follows."Reinventing the television is not only a matter of which makes it simpler to locate programs, though. The Television has become an entertainment and communications center for a lot of houses, with a lot more functions making it even harder to build up an answer.InchWe do not know what's next," states Zander Lurie, senior Vice president of proper development at CBS. "Customers are simply considering that fusion of TV with movies as well as on-demand, but individuals are programming their music and home security systems through their TV now too. If 10 very wise people sitting lower and came up what their ideal interface is, they'd be very, completely different.Inch1 trend that's certain to be critical is social discovery, helping audiences find content by seeing what buddies are watching to see which episodes are "trending." Knowing that, there's lots of curiosity about Facebook's new application structure and just how it drives customers to streaming services."The Net is a large-ass recommendation engine," Lurie states. The old-fashioned program guide will probably have an extreme transformation. As opposed to the familiar text power grid, some producers are experimentation having a more visual model. But that presents its very own challenges."[Make a] kind of cover flow where you are moving through visual imagery of shows rather than text names," Engler states. "Using the Verizon FiOS iPad application, searching with the schedule by cover art of (each) show. The issue is, many shows do not have which cover art and definitely not inside a format that may be reduced. Therefore it becomes incumbent upon us, the designers, to produce assets that might be helpful for the reason that format."Weight loss third-party content services explore cloud distribution, some think the television will end up a main issue with that ecosystem. CBS' Lurie foresees a period when the family room flatscreen will look like a computer monitor, with content being given into it through the cloud.John Vanston, chairman of Technology Futures, concurs, adding he thinks one key trend is going to be sets that permit the docking of other products (putting users' videos, pictures and private calendars and much more on the TV)."The Television,Inch he states, "may be the interface towards the cloud."HIGHLIGHTS9:15 a.m. Research: Tom Adams, director and principal analyst U.S. media at IHS Screen Digest9:45 a.m.Keynote Q&A: Jon Favreau. The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn

'The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn'A Paramount (in U.S./U.K.) release presented with Columbia Pictures in association with Hemisphere Media Capital of an Amblin Entertainment, Wingnut Films, Kennedy/Marshall production. Produced by Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Kathleen Kennedy. Executive producers, Ken Kamins, Nick Rodwell, Stephane Sperry. Co-producers, Carolynne Cunningham, Jason McGatlin. Directed by Steven Spielberg. Screenplay, Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish, based on the comicbook series "The Adventures of Tintin" by Herge.Tintin - Jamie Bell Capt. Archibald Haddock - Andy Serkis Ivan Ivanovitch Sakharine - Daniel Craig Thomson - Nick Frost Thompson - Simon Pegg Silk - Toby Jones Tom - Mackenzie Crook Allan - Daniel Mays Ben Salaad - Gad Elmaleh Barnaby - Joe Starr Bianca Castafiore - Kim Stengel Mrs. Finch - Sonja Fortag Lt. Delacourt - Tony Curran (English dialogue)Steven Spielberg was apparently turned on to the Belgian comicstrip hero Tintin while making his first Indiana Jones films, so it seems entirely fitting that his motion-capture animation "The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn" should rep such a rollicking return to action-adventure form, especially after the disappointment of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." Clearly rejuvenated by his collaboration with producer Peter Jackson, and blessed with a smart script and the best craftsmanship money can buy, Spielberg has fashioned a whiz-bang thrill ride that's largely faithful to the wholesome spirit of his source but still appealing to younger, Tintin-challenged auds. Pic should do thundering typhoon biz globally, but will whirl especially fast in Europe. Paramount release is skedded to bow Oct. 22 in Euroland and then roll out worldwide, hitting North America just in time for Christmas. It's a canny distribution strategy that will maximize exposure and B.O. potential in the territories that know Belgian artist Herge's source material best, thereby building up a solid rep before the pic reaches the U.S., where Tintin is still effectively a cult figure, known mostly among comicbook fans and Europhile cognoscenti. Early buzz on fan sites indicated that expectations weren't high for Spielberg's take on the material, given the arguably overused devices of 3D and motion-capture. Working hand-in-hand with Jackson, however, the director and his team have deployed both technologies with subtle finesse throughout, exploiting 3D's potential just enough to make the action scenes that much more effective without overdoing it; likewise, the motion-capture performances have been achieved with such exactitude they look effortless, to the point where the characters, with their exaggerated features, almost resemble flesh-and-blood thesps wearing prosthetic makeup. Indeed, in the early going auds might wonder why the filmmakers bothered with motion-capture at all. But the choice starts to make sense once Snowy, Tintin's faithful white terrier, performs antics not even the best-trained pooch could perform and the sets, stunts and action sequences become ever more lavish. Extreme Tintin purists might quibble that the screenplay, by all-Brit team Steven Moffat ("Doctor Who"), Edgar Wright ("Shaun of the Dead") and Joe Cornish ("Attack the Block"), doesn't stick to the letter of Herve's original strips. But others will appreciate how skillfully it shuffles and restacks elements from three of the adventures: slices from "The Crab With the Golden Claws" (published in 1943), the lion's share from "The Secret of the Unicorn" and a wee bit from "Red Rackham's Treasure" (both published in 1945). The remainder of the latter book will presumably bedrock the inevitable sequel. Accompanied by his mutt mate Snowy, boy reporter Tintin (voiced by and based on the movements of Jamie Bell) buys a scale model of an old ship called the Unicorn at an outdoor market in an unnamed city with both French and English writing on its storefronts -- a sly bit of fudging that tips its hat to the fact that the books were retranslated for every country they were published in. Two other men immediately try to repurchase the model off him, first sinister gent Sakharine (Daniel Craig) and then an American named Barnaby (Joe Starr). Tintin refuses, and once he realizes the ship contains a vital clue about the location of missing treasure, the ever-inquisitive lad begins his adventure in earnest. Eventually he's kidnapped and spirited off to the Karaboudjan, a steamer nominally under the command of one Capt. Archibald Haddock (Andy Serkis), whose permanent state of inebriation has left him powerless against the machinations of Sakharine. Haddock, it transpires, is the last remaining descendant of Sir Francis Haddock (also Serkis in flashbacks) a 17th-century naval commander who lost his ship, the Unicorn, in a battle with pirates led by Red Rackham (Craig). Tintin helps Haddock escape, and after a detour in the Sahara and a bravura chase through the fictional city of Bagghar, Morocco (all done in one shot), they make their way back to their point of origin. Along the way, they're aided and abetted by two bumbling, identical Interpol officers named Thomson and Thompson (Wright regulars Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, respectively), who aren't that critical to the plot but are helpful in terms of comic relief. Aside from a crack about a shepherd said to have shown too much enthusiasm for animal husbandry, the humor throughout is resolutely PG-friendly, lacking in the knowing irony and snarky, anachronistic wisecracks that have become such predictable fixtures of other recent blockbusters and reboots. Spielberg largely honors the innocent, gung-ho tone of the original stories, with their air of boyish derring-do (femme characters barely feature at all here), sensibly shunning the racist and anti-Semitic elements that just won't wash with contempo auds. Result is retro without being stodgy or antiquated; Tintin himself, for instance, has a more mischievous glint in his eye than the wide-eyed naif of the strips, which makes him feel more modern, if curiously unplaceable in terms of age. The worst that could be said of "The Secret of the Unicorn" is that the action is so relentless, it nearly comes to feel like a videogame as it leaps from one challenge to the next. Younger auds will embrace it more than older ones, although even teens may feel it lacks the kitsch majesty that made "Avatar" such a hit. Toon geeks are likely to be among "Tintin's" biggest fans, so consistently stylish and richly detailed is its design work. With immense sensitivity, the animators have translated Herge's spare, elegant drawings into a multidimensional world that seems realistic (especially in its use of chiaroscuro lighting, which plays wonderfully with sunlight and shadows throughout) yet still charmingly stylized and cartoony. Perhaps the film's sweetest joke comes at the very beginning, when a street artist, modeled on the real Herge, does a quick-sketch portrait of Tintin that looks exactly like one of the original strips. Today Movieline received a press release announcing the viral marketing website for Abe Sylvia’s Dirty Girl called Dirty Secrets Blog, a “wildly addictive blog [that] lets users anonymously spill their dirty secret.” There, after confirming that you are at least 13 years old — seriously, only 13 years old — users can create a clever pseudonym and post about their own naughty musings and sexual fantasies, just the way Dirty Girl’s heroine Danielle (Juno Temple) might…if she had access to the Internet in the ’80s. Take a look at some of the threads (warning: NSFW): Will you be partaking in this sexy marketing adventure? Or does the idea of this sexual fantasy blog targeting teenagers make you cringe and wish for simpler times like Oklahoma in the ’80s? Maybe that’s the actual intention of this viral venture. Dirty Girl premieres October 7 and follows “the story of two mismatched misfits headed for the bright lights of California, and how they discover each other and themselves through a funny and serendipitous friendship.” The Juno Temple-starrer is rated R “for sexual content including graphic nudity, and for language,” and though it’s not readily apparent exactly what the quirky road trip pic has in common with the Dirty Secrets blog aside from its title and filthy mind, Weinstein Co. might want to in the least reconsider boosting its age-gate. Otherwise youngsters who aren’t even old enough to buy a ticket could wind up learning a lot more from the film’s viral blog than the film itself. Update: We’ve added evidence that users only need to be 13 to enter the site. [Dirty Secrets]

Still, executive producer Shonda Rhimes promises, "The love remains.Inch "I did not are thinking about creating situations this year where something happened plus they split up," she continues. "What's adult relating to this would be to give our figures impossible situations and find out the way they get through it together." That's not saying Cristina and Owen, who rushed into marriage as a direct consequence from the Dallas Sophistication shooting rampage, will not possess a falling-out consequently from the abortion. "These were within an impossible position where he wanted one factor and she or he wanted another, and that he gave her what he felt she needed," Rhimes states. "It is going to insert them in an unusual position with each other for some time.Inch Take a look at Grey's Anatomy's most jaw-shedding moments "They are likely to shut lower their feelings about this for quite a while," McKidd adds, observing that becoming chief is really a blessing in disguise for Owen. NBC Buys Western Produced By Sean Hayes

EXCLUSIVE: Westerns remain a hot genre within the TV systems. NBC, the initial broadcast internet to leap round the trend in the large way a year ago while using pilot order to Restoration, has bought an untitled Western project from Sean Hayes’ Hazy Mills production company. Friday Evening Lights alumna Kerry Ehrin is writing the project, that's occur the 1880s and concentrates on Jacob Morris, a young, eccentric Colonial physician of mental disorders who moves with a primitive Western town within the ft in the Colorado Rockies. There he immediately stays out while he doesn’t fight getting a gun but rather uses new ideas that are being practiced inside the East. A bad tone in the show mixes drama and comedy, like the series Ehrin has most recently done, NBC’s Motherhood. Ehrin, Hayes and also the Hazy Mills creating partner Todd Milliner will executive produce for Universal TV. Milliner mentioned he and Hayes happen to be talking about doing Western for a while but didn’t think a broadcast network would choose this. These were given advised with the recent fascination with the genre but mostly by NBC’s decision to have their drama project Grimm to series. Grimm, a cop procedural with fairy-tale elements, was created by Hazy Mills five years ago if the was setup at CBS. Milliner and Hayes had almost lost hope when NBC acquired Grimm to pilot after which it to series taken. “Grimm was the oddest idea we have had,” Milliner recognized. “(The pickup) shows that you need to keep on even if it’s not the optimum time or perhaps the right network. Eventually it'll be.” Hayes and Milliner recently pitched the idea for your Western to NBC, which loved it. The network suggested Ehrin just like a author, as well as the project became a member of together quickly. This is among three projects Hazy Mills has inside the works at NBC, where it's within unique deal. Others r a comedy starring Hayes since the half of the gay couple getting a teenager daughter, that's being put together by Peter Tolan, and game show pilot Celebrity Game Evening, featuring stars crashes people’s weekly game nights. In addition, the 8-year-old customers are behind TV Land’s hit Hot In Cleveland. The Ehrin-written NBC project joins two other broadcast Westerns in development for next season, both at ABC. Ron Moore’s Hangtown is occur the very first 1900s then one of the three lead figures has similar roots to Jacob Morris’. The War from the Buttons (La Guerre des boutons)

A UGC Distribution discharge of a 1 World Films production, in colaboration with TF1 Droits Audiovisuels, TF1 Films, L'ensemble des Films du Gorak, using the participation of Backup Films, Hoche Artois Images, Ufilm, Ufund, TF1, TPS Star. (Worldwide sales: TF1 Intl, Paris.) Created by Matthew Gledhill. Executive producer, Marc du Pontavice. Directed, compiled by Yann Samuell, in line with the novel by Louis Pergaud. With: Eric Elmosnino, Mathilde Seigner, Fred Testot, Alain Chabat, Vincent Bres, Salome Lemire, Theo Bertrand, Tristan Vichard, Tom Rivoire, Louis Lefevbre, Victor le Blond, Arthur Garnier, June Maitre, Paloma Lebeaut, Theo Fernandez, Arno Feffer. Two bands of rowdy French kids from neighboring countryside towns duke it for supremacy using large mouths and small slingshots in "The War from the Buttons," the very first of two new adaptations of Louis Pergaud's novel. Occur 1960, scribe-helmer Yann Samuell's enjoyable pic uses the distant Algerian War like a backdrop to have an search for becoming an adult and saying a person's independence, without becoming excessively didactic or losing the sheer exuberance to be a ten-year-old. Sept. 14 opening was solid, however the rival adaptation, launched Sept. 21, will eat into its B.O. potential. After two Coco Chanel biopics, the "War from the Buttons" war is French cinema's latest clash of similarly designed films, here triggered because the 1912 novel's privileges fell in to the public domain lately. The Rabelais-esque tale is area of the French curriculum, though "War's" well known comes mostly from Yves Robert's oft-public film adaptation from 1962, which colored a bleak picture of existence within the French provinces (the storyline seemed to be shot in British by John Roberts in 1994). Whereas his friend Christopher Barratier has selected to create his new adaptation in the mid 1940s, Samuell ("Love Me should you Dare") has elected for 1960, permitting him to allow the war from the grown ups, the Algerian War, unspool mostly offscreen. From time to time, however, it's strongly introduced to existence in dialogue, most particularly once the father (Arno Feffer) from the only girl from the group, Lanterne (Salome Lemire), comes back home in the front and describes the disasters he's experienced to his neighbor, Lanterne's classmate Lebrac (Vincent Bres). Lebrac's teacher, Mr. Merlin (Eric Elmosnino), sees potential within the boy, though Lebrac's stern, widowed mother (Mathilde Seigner) wants him to help at their farm after which become a student, therefore the boy may bring home some much-needed dough. In Samuell's retelling, 10-year-old Lebrac may be the pivot which the storyline turns, with all of other figures existing mainly in relationship to him. This enables the scribe-helmer to check out teacher-pupil, mother-boy and boy-girl associations as the feud between Lebrac's gang which from the "Aztec" (Theo Bertrand), from the parish nearby, ferments (and from time to time explodes) without anyone's knowledge. The tactic provides the sprawling and episodic tale an effective focus, although it does mean that associations that do not involve Lebrac, like the competition between Mr. Merlin and the friend in the other village (Alain Chabat), will never be quite integrated. Styles of private liberty and responsibility run throughout, even though Samuell does not say anything new or deep on these subjects, they are doing provide further narrative glue. Properly, to have an adaptation of the book famous because of its flowery prose, the pic also will get lots of mileage from clever wordplay (frequently including swear words) that will need linguistic acrobatics in subtitles. Newcomer Lebres is bullets, equally credible like a rousing teen leader along with a pensive youth battling with large questions and issues. He's encircled with a ragtag gang of cute and able youngsters, as the grown ups are professional, with Elmosnino ("Gainsbourgh") the standout as Lebrac's sincere teacher. Lots of "War's" energy originates from its agile cutting and camerawork, which follows the children around because they play and fight, though Samuell from time to time goes overboard in the manipulation from the vibrant colors and saturation levels. A famous scene, by which Lebrac's gang fights naked to prevent getting their opponents stop their clothes' buttons as punishment (hence the title), is up-to-date to some a little more staid version here, imaginatively staged inside a area in which the wheat, just sufficient, doubles as fig leaves. Score by Klaus Badelt is not particularly memorable, and also the periodic utilization of electronic instruments does not jive using the pic's lightly nostalgic vibe.Camera (color, widescreen, 35mm-to-HD), Julien Hirsch editor, Sylvie Landra music, Klaus Badelt production designer, Pierre-Francois Limbosch costume designer, Charlotte now David seem (Dolby), Nicolas Cantin effects supervisor, Olivier p Laveleye stunt coordinator, Dominique Fouassier assistant director, Valerie Othnin-Girard casting, Stephane Batut, Julie Davod. Examined at Mon Cine, Anglet, France, Sept. 18, 2011. Running time: 109 MIN. Contact Boyd van Hoeij at news@variety.com

It is designed to give independent writers access to development executives at networks. This year, participating networks included MTV, A&E and Sundance. 'Wrath Of The Titans' Star Edgar Ramirez: Ares Is 'Damaged' Goods

Edgar Ramirez kills people. On screen. He played an assassin in The Bourne Ultimatum and international terrorist Carlos the Jackal in the Sundance Channel miniseries Carlos, for which he earned an Emmy nomination this year. When MTV News caught up with him on the Emmys red carpet, Ramirez talked about his next killer role: Ares, god of war and violence, in the Clash of the Titans sequel, "Wrath of the Titans," scheduled for release in March, 2012. He wasnt hugged enough, said Ramirez of his character. Hes a wounded, damaged kid, you know? Ares is also a kid with some very robust family members. In Wrath, Liam Neeson reprises his role as Ares dad, Zeus. Ralph Fiennes is also back as Uncle Hades, as is Sam Worthington as the main man/god and Ares brother, Perseus. Though Ares and Perseus have a Cain and Abel kind of thing going on in the film, Ramirez feels nothing but brotherly love for Worthington. Hes my brother on set, hes my brother in real life, he said. Interestingly, though these screen gods are family - and of course theyre all Greek - the actors who portray them hail from the four corners of the earth. They come from Ireland, England, Sam from Australia and Im from Venezuela, Ramirez explained. So its a very global movie. With Jonathan Liebesman (Battle Los Angeles) handling directing duties this time around, the hope is that this second Clash movie will top the first. Ramirez is confident that it will. Im very proud. We had a lot of fun and we were all very committed to it Its going to be a very fun, entertaining, and thrilling tragedy, this movie. Another thing to hope for: that Ramirez doesnt let this killer thing go to his head. Wed hate to see Barry Pepper knocked off for nabbing that Emmy. Not Really $a million Could Stop 50 Cent's New Movie From Being Re-named

Emcees feuding with one another is certainly not new, but emcees feuding with famous writers? There's the initial for everything, apparently. Rapper/actor/entrepreneur Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson lately went right into a little legal trouble within the title of the approaching movie, 'All Things Fall Apart' (which, surprise, made Moviefone's listing of Approaching Terrible 50 Cent Movies). Within the Mario Van Peebles-directed flick, Jackson plays a university football player identified with cancer (he apparently lost 54 pounds for that role). Issue is, Chinua Achebe, one among Africa's finest authors, authored a magazine of the identical title a lot more than half a century ago. (It's pretty famous you might have heard about it.) Based on Achebe's camping, Jackson allegedly offered a $a million payment to support the title privileges, but was summarily shot lower. "[It] will not be offered for £1bn," Achebe's reps stated. (For reference, $1 billion pounds means almost $1.5 billion U.S. dollars.) The recently named 'All Things Fall Apart' should get to theaters sometime the coming year. Renny Harlin and Geena Davis Really Did Not Want To Make Cutthroat Island

“Originally, Michael Douglas was supposed to star in [the movie]. And he walked away. At that point I was left there with my then-wife, Geena Davis and myself, and a company that was already belly-up. We begged to be let go. We begged that we didn’t have to make this movie.” In fact, the couple was so frightened that they sunk their own money into a last-ditch script rewrite. “We felt that a pirate movie with a female lead was suicidal, but we were contractually obligated. […] I personally spent a million dollars of my own money, I hired Mark Norman, who had won an Oscar for writing Shakespeare in Love.” Even so, Cutthroat Island turned out to be one of the biggest box office disasters of all time and sunk Carolco production company. Lesson learned! [KCRW via SlashFilm]

The beautiful bride graces the cover of People magazines September 5 issue adorned with a $2.5 million diamond headpiece, but conspicuously missing her groom and dishes on her lavish ceremony inside the pages of the mag. Despite the over-the-top ceremony attended by over 400 guests and filmed for a TV special Kim said glamor was not the couples main goal. It was really about our family and each other, she said. Jen Garcia, People magazines assistant editor, stopped by Access Hollywood Live on Wednesday to reveal behind-the-scenes details of their upcoming issue, which boasts exclusive wedding photos. We sorted through thousands of pictures, Jen told Kit Hoover and guest co-host Arsenio Hall of how the mag chose the cover photo. Looking for ones that didnt have Kris? Arsenio laughed, pointing to a small inset photo that appears on the cover. Its all about the bride. We wanted her, Jen said, defending the magazine (which paid $1.5 million for rights to the event photographs). Its her day, we wanted her on the cover. [Kris] has got a little height on her, she added. Its kind of tough to get them in the [same] shot.
